JMW Turner was an inveterate traveller, both in Britain and on the Continent. But his journeys were all business trips, made to gather material for engravings, watercolours or oil paintings. In this talk we will look at the aspects of Brighton that fascinated Turner: modern engineering in the Chain Pier, fashionable society in the bathing machines and the Pavilion, shipping struggling against the power of the sea and the effects of sunlight through the clouds and over the water.
